Intro to Soil - Acids and Bases

Rain didn't dampen the enthusiasm to learn! D.C. Wolfe Elementary students learned about how little of the earth's surface is covered with soil that is suitable for growing food. Module leaders then introduced the concept of pH as an indicator. The pH of a liquid, soil, or other substance indicates whether it is acidic, neutral, or basic. Students conducted experiments to test pH values for water, milk, vinegar, apple juice, and soda water and recorded the results on a chart. The students also tested a variety of soils for their pH and learned how changing the pH of the soil can affect what will grow in it.
